Meetings:

Two days of hearings for students' appeals of their dismissals, lasting from 8:00 AM - 5:30 PM, are held after fall semester and spring semester. This year the fall semester meeting was held on January 17 & 18, 2001. The spring semester meeting will be held on June 6 & 7, 2001. No formal minutes of the hearings are taken. A summary of the Committee's actions at the fall meeting, prepared by Phyllis Koenig at the direction of the Acting Registrar, Candace Deen, is attached to this report. A report of the actions at the spring meeting will be presented to the Faculty Senate at the first meeting of the fall semester. Immediately following each hearing, the student receives the results of the appeal orally and later receives a letter reiterating this information.

Chair's Report to Senate

At the February 6 meeting of Faculty Senate, the Chair of the Committee reported the results of the hearings. Three issues and recommendations were presented at this meeting.

  1. When appropriate following a student request, professors submit change-of-grade forms during the hearings, complicating the review process. Whenever possible, these changes should be made before the hearings begin so students do not needlessly sit through a hearing.
  2. As noted by faculty, students, and parents, the composition of the Committee does not adequately reflect the school and non-school areas of the University. Faculty Senate should review the current composition and determine whether a change in composition should be made.
  3. The current composition of the Committee is not reflected in the on-line Governance Manual. The Manual should be updated.
