Meetings:
One meeting was held during the fall semester with members of the 2003-2004-theme committee: Unity Through Diversity (Chair, Rita Smith Wade-El, and members of the MU Commission on Cultural Diversity).

Other Deliberations and Actions:
Due to the 150th Anniversary Celebration, the committee members will not solicit suggestions from students, faculty or staff for the 2004-2005 or 2005-06 academic year themes. During the Anniversary years, the University's 150th Anniversary Celebration Committee will coordinate all campus speaker and special event programs.

The 2002-2003 Theme Committee, (chaired by Drs. Leroy Hopkins, Steve Miller, and Darla Williams), Crossing Boundaries: Decolonializing the Curriculum, supported the following events: A book project with the Honors College, co-sponsored a speaker with the Women's Studies program, supported the Women's Studies Film series, co-sponsored Dr. Ron Takaki with the Latino Studies program, and sponsored a speaker as part of the Black Culture Celebration.

Currents plans for the 2003-2004 Academic Theme, Unity Through Diversity, include a campus-wide diversity focus to be held on April 21-22, 2004. Events planned for April 21st include Dialogues on Race, Gender, Ethnicity, Sexual Orientation and Religion. Events planned for April 22 include the following: continuous showing of films in the SMC-MPR, art exhibits and other exhibits celebrating diversity located in all SMC and Gordinier lobbies, and a lecture by keynote speaker Michael Eric Dyson. During the Fall 2003 Semester, brainstorming and collaboration events will occur to engage the campus community in discussions about diversity and as preparation for the campus-wide events in April.
