SUBJECT:	APPROVAL OF FACULTY SENATE CURRICULAR RECOMMENDATIONS

As the President's designee, I am informing you of the approval of the following Faculty Senate Curricular Actions:

1) Faculty Senate actions at meeting on March 7, 2000

Changes in Courses/Curricula:
Increase the credits hours earned in all graduate courses from 2 to 3. Decrease the number of credits required for the M.A. and M.Ed. degrees from 34 to 33.

These changes include several components:

a. All associated undergraduate courses will also increase in credits earned from 2 to 3. These courses are only offered at the same time as a graduate course.

b. The M.A. degree consists of 4 blocks:

• Civilization (9 credits),
• Literature (9 credits),
• Language (12 credits),
• Elective/Thesis (3 credits)

c. The M.Ed. degree consists of 6 blocks:

• Professional Core (9 credits),
• Civilization (6 credits),
• Literature (6 credits),
• Language (9 credits),
• Elective or Research/Thesis (3 credits)

d. The courses that satisfy the above blocks are spelled out in the proposal approved by Faculty Senate.

COMMENT: This change has several positive implications: 1) students in the summer language program will now enroll and pay for 3 credits instead of 2, possibly increasing the total credit generation, 2) there is no increase in credits required for the master's degrees, 3) credits will be more easily transferable to/from other universities, 4) the inconsistency in faculty loads associated with these two credit courses will be corrected.

Approved, effective retroactively to spring 2000

Formalization of Cooperative Education Policy:
The minimum number of credits for any cooperative education experience is 3 credits. The maximum number of credits allowed for one cooperative education course is 12

COMMENT: This change guarantees that cooperative education internships are of sufficient length and quality to warrant three academic credits. The change in the maximum will allow for experiences that cover longer time periods. Both changes will provide more uniformity in awarding credit across the university.

Changes in Courses/Curricula:
Add the statement below to the "Requirements and Policies" statement for the following degree programs in chemistry:
• B.S. In Chemistry
• B.S. In Chemistry - Biochemistry Option
• B.S. In Chemistry - Environmental Option
• B.S. In Chemistry - Polymer Chemistry Option
• B.S. in Secondary Education - Chemistry
• B.A. In Chemistry
• B.A. In Chemistry Cooperative Engineering

"Chemistry majors are required to have a minimum grade of C (2.0) in required 100-200 level courses that are prerequisites to other required chemistry courses." Currently these courses include CHEM 111,112, 231,232,251,265.

Approved, effective Fall 2000

Changes in Academic Policies:
a) Change the minimum residency credit requirement for two-year college transfer students from 60 to 30.
COMMENT: This change will remove an inconsistency in how transfer students are treated depending on their most recent college enrollment. It will assist non-traditional and working students in meeting degree requirements more efficiently. This policy should be reviewed in 2005 to make sure it is meeting these goals and has had no adverse effect on enrollments.

Approved, effective retroactively for all currently enrolled transfer students

b) Limit the number of courses/credits for students on academic probation

Add the following "Additional sentence" to the Governance Manual, Section 3, Academic Standards, Probation and Dismissal, Paragraph 2 Academic Probation:

Current Statement - 2nd sentence:
While on probation, students are not allowed to pre-register (register) for winter and/or pre-summer sessions unless they have the permission of their academic advisor or his/her designee.

Additional sentence:
"Additionally, such students are not allowed to pre-register for more than 4 courses or 13 credits, whichever is less, in any term, session, or semester unless they have the written permission of the advisor, chair, head of Academic Advisement, or appropriate designee"

COMMENT: This change will assist at-risk students in meeting course requirements. The Academic Standards Committee has observed that students on probation often try to make up too much work at one time and as a result fail again. This change forces the involvement of advisors in determining the proper course load for students on probation.

Approved, effective fall 2000.

c) Remove the 2.0 restriction on study at other institutions
Delete the following "phrase to be deleted" from the Governance Manual, Section 3, Page 87, Study at Other Institutions

Current Statement:
Any student with a cumulative quality point average of 2.0 or better who wishes to pursue any part of Millersville's program at another institution will be required …...

Phrase to be deleted:
" with a cumulative quality point average of 2.0 or better "

COMMENT: This change will allow students who cannot afford to take courses at Millersville University in summer or winter to take appropriate courses at a local college near their home. The Enrollment Management Steering Committee recommended this change as an incentive for students to return to Millersville in the fall and thus to enhance retention.
