The following curricular changes have been approved for the Chemistry Department, effective Winter 2004.

Course Title and Description
CHEM 101: The Science of Chemistry (G2)

A course offering a brief introduction to chemical principles and to their relevance to modern society at both regional and global levels. Topics are presented in a mostly descriptive fashion. No credit toward chemistry major. 3 hours lecture. Offered in fall.

Curricular Change: Revise Title and Course Description
CHEM 101: Chemistry! Better Things for Better Living (G2)

A brief introduction to chemistry and its uses in modern society: consumer, environmental, and industrial applications. Presented in a mostly descriptive fashion. No credit toward chemistry major. 3 hours lecture. Offered in fall.

Course Curricular Change: Pre-requisite Clarification
CHEM 110: Fundamentals of Chemistry Revise CHEM 110 pre-requisite.
Old Pre-requisite: Placement in CHEM 110 is on the basis of placement examination and adviser recommendations.
New Pre-requisite: Placement in CHEM 110 on the basis of placement exam before registration.
Note and Rationale: A test score pre-requisite of "CPT 110" will be assigned to students and used as a pre-requisite in the registration system. The department has been administering the Toledo Exam (chemistry placement test) for over 20 years. The data collected indicates that students who are properly placed in the appropriate chemistry course are more successful. The department, in consultation with the Registrar, believes this pre-requisite change will place students in the appropriate chemistry course.
