SUBJECT: APPROVAL OF FACULTY SENATE CURRICULAR RECOMMENDATIONS

As the President's designee, I am informing you of the approvals of the following Faculty Senate Curricular Actions.

Faculty Senate action at July 18, 2005, meeting:

Changes in Undergraduate Courses/Curricula:

Minor in Biology

Biology Minor - Curriculum: 20 credits minimum Proposed Changes Analysis/Implications
Required Biology Courses (15 credits)*
  • BIOL 263**, BIOL 365***, BIOL 211, BIOL 221

*Note: Competency in Biology may be demonstrated by:

  1. A course grade of A or B in AP Biology
  2. A score of 3 or better in the national AP exam
  3. A successful score on the CLEP exam
  4. A passing grade for general biology (BIOL 100)
Please note the following pre-requisites:
**ENGL 110 and CHEM 112 for BIOL 263
*** CHEM 231 or 235 is a recommended pre-requisite for BIOL 365

Biology Electives (5 credits)

  • Choose electives at the 300 or 400 level to bring total Biology credits to 20. One 200 level elective may be used upon adviser's approval.
Required Biology Courses (10-11 credits)
  • BIOL 100*
Choose two of the following:
  • BIOL 263**, BIOL 365***, BIOL 211, BIOL 221

* The requirement for BIOL 100 may be satisfied by one of the following:

  1. A course grade of A or B in AP Biology
  2. A score of 3 or better in the national AP exam
  3. A successful score on the CLEP exam
  4. A passing grade for general biology (BIOL 100)
Students placing out of BIOL 100 will require a minimum of 12-13 s.h. of electives to bring the total credits for the minor to 20 s.h.

Allows greater flexibility for students and advisors to devise a program of study that is both rigorous in content and tailored to the needs and interests of the student.

  • Students will be able to satisfy the Advanced Writing (AW) component with the History seminar course, HIST 406 if she/he receives a grade of B or higher for the course.

  • The Biology Department requested a waiver of the Perspectives Requirement by Faculty Senate. The waiver would be granted to comply with the credit limitations imposed by the Board of Governors. If the content of any of the courses in the Biology BSEd were to change substantially, the waiver would have to be reconsidered.
