Faculty Senate Meeting

6 September 1994


Chairperson Eidam called the meeting to order at 4:07 p.m. in Chryst 210. He immediately called for and received unanimous consent to allow Dr. Beverly Schneller (past secretary and alternate senator - English) to serve as Secretary pro tem. All departments except Economics were represented.

Minutes

The minutes of the 14 June meeting were approved as read. One correction to BIOL 438: Neurobiology was heard.

REPORTS

Chairperson's

Chairperson Eidam distributed his announcements at the meeting (see Appendix A). On behalf of the Senators, he welcomed Provost F. McNairy and he thanked President J. Caputo for funding the Senate's reception, held before the day's meeting, to welcome the Provost.

Reports of Administrative Officers

President J. Caputo greeted the Senators and expanded on remarks he made at the Convocation, September 1, concerning the initial discussion of re-organization of the structure of the university. He commented on the need to begin a dialogue, within academic departments, on how the university arises to initiatives generated by internal and external forces within individual disciplines.

Provost F. McNairy greeted the Senators and expressed her interest in working with the body.

Vice-President for Student Affairs, Dr. G. Reighard, after greeting the Senators, said the students were off to a good start and they appeared excited and happy to be at Millersville University. He announced he was working with MU Police Chief W. Silcox to resolve some problems in space reductions in parking lots paved during the summer. He informed the Senate that the MU Police are now armed, having gone through careful and thorough testing and re-training in the summer.

Associate Vice-President for Academic Affairs, Dr. J. Stager offered estimated figures on the fall enrollment. Approximately 7,382 students are enrolled in the university and the average class size is 25.3. He indicated he would make the established figures available to the Senate in October.

Reports of Standing Committees

Undergraduate Course and Program Review

Senator C. McLeod introduced Art 244: Typography, a new three-credit non- general education course under the three-meeting rule.

Academic Theme

Senator J. Piperberg announced two lectures on September 14 and September 28.

Proposed Courses

COMM 451: Public Relations Issues and Cases and COMM 452: Public Relations Campaigns were approved.

Business

At 4:40 p.m., the Senate began conducting its annual elections. The results are shown in Appendix B. Senate thanks Susan Luek for serving as recorder and B. Dorman and D. Hutchens for tallying the votes.

Because of the lateness of the hour, the remaining business was returned to the agenda.

The meeting adjourned at 5:40 p.m. (Piperberg-Yelagotes).

The next meeting of the Faculty Senate is Tuesday, September 20 from 4:05 - 5:45 p.m. in Chryst 210.
