Chairperson D. Eidam called the meeting to order at 4:08 p.m. in Chryst Hall, Room 210. All departments except Art, Nursing, and Special Education were represented.

Minutes

Two corrections to the 2 September minutes were made: spelling of D. Hutchens (p. 4259) and five courses were approved (pp. 4261, 4262). The minutes were approved with these emendations.

Reports

Chairperson

D. Eidam thanked the Secretary for purchasing the tape recorder for the Senate. He announced Dr. Tracey Weis is the Provost's appointee to the Academic Outcomes Assessment Committee, and, he welcomed Dr. Susan Luek, who returns to the Senate representing the Psychology Department. Chairperson Eidam elaborated on the C-minimum grade policy described on p. 4259 of the 2 September minutes.

Student Senate

M. Dinofia introduced the student representatives to the Senate--Emily Brennan, Tanya Murphy, and Sudeku Sonecha. She distributed a listing of Student Senate committee members and commented on the successful elections conducted 11 September.

President McNairy

President McNairy was away at an MU Foundation Meeting.

Vice-Presidents

Provosts

Provost J. Stager mentioned the departments and campus services which have moved to Lyle and he indicated announcements describing the relocations would be published campus-wide.

Associate Provost J. Roller said the International Selection Committee now reports to her. She asked for a motion to revise the language of the committee's charter, subsection 1B to state "Two members, to be appointed by the provost or his/her designee..." (GM p. 23). The Dorman-Borger-Reese motion carried.

Vice-President E. Thomas called Senators attention to two recent mailings from the Counseling Center, "Making a Counseling Referral: A Guide for Faculty and Staff," and from Career Services announcing a program on gaining admission to graduate school scheduled for 1 October in the Lehr Dining Room, Bolger Conference Center, at 8 p.m.

Committees

Graduate Curriculum

Chairman R. Kerper placed BIOL 624: Mycology under the one-meeting rule.

Undergraduate Course and Program Review

Chairman R. Wismer asked the Senators to make it clear in their departments that proposers of new courses are responsible for moving the courses from one curriculum committee to another.

Academic Standards

Chairperson J. Piperberg said the committee would be meeting soon to discuss changes to procedures concerning dismissal and appeal and the letters sent to students describing these procedures.

University Academic Theme

Chairperson J. Piperberg announced the committee would be meeting this semester to write a manual for theme managers.

University Honors

Chairperson M. Warmkessel announced Alison S. Lathrop (Earth Sciences) will serve as Acting Assistant Director of the Honors Program.

Academic Policies

Chairperson K. Bookmiller mentioned she might need to place the election of a Social Sciences representative to replace a member on leave on the October 7 agenda.

BUSINESS

ELECTIONS

Senate elected B. Schneller (ENG) to the Commencement Speaker Committee and M. Houlahan (MUS) to the Joint Senate Conference Committee. On a McCade-Piperberg motion to suspend the rules, R. Frerichs was elected Chair of the Faculty-Student Athletic Committee. D. Shanahan (GEO) was elected to UCPRC as one of two required Social Sciences representatives.

Vacancies remain on the following committees:

Commencement Speaker -- Social Sciences

General Education -- Non-School

UCPRC -- Humanities (1) and Social Sciences (1)

Revision of GM Language

After a brief discussion, the prposal to enact the one-meeting rule for undergraduate course approvals passed on an Eidam-Dorman motion.

Proposal to Increase OSHM Credits

Senator McCade discussed the proposal (pp. 4272-4281, 2 September minutes) which raises the total number of credits in major, minor, and pending A.A. degree programs. The matter was returned to the Senate because the Academic Proposal form (p. 4273) was inadvertently omitted from the materials Senate previously approved. On a McCade-Dorman motion the proposal passed.

The meeting adjourned at 4:40 p.m. The next meeting of the Senate is 7 October at 4:05 p.m. in Chryst Hall, room 210.
