Faculty Senate Minutes
7 October 1997
WHEREAS LeonaFrances Woskowiak has announced her retirement from the Music
Faculty of Millersville University after 24 years of service; and
WHEREAS she has helped develop numerous students into fine musicians and
educators through her excellent teaching in methods courses, student
teacher supervision, private instruction, courses for the general student
and as director of the Chanteurs; and
WHEREAS she has been a major force in curriculum development by creating
and designing both the Cadet Teaching Program and the Preparatory Program;
WHEREAS she has brought great honor to the university and service to the
community through her leadership roles in the Music Educators National
Conference as state representative in the special learner area, the
Pennsylvania Music Educators Association as state chairman of the
Curriculum/Instruction and Early Childhood/Special Learner committees and
her serving on the executive board; and
WHEREAS she has continually fostered the inclusion of the arts in
education through her work for the Pennsylvania Department of Education as
special appointee to the Pennsylvania Assessment Through Themes committee,
the State Regulations for Teacher Certification committee, the Outcomes
Based Education committee, and especially her co-authorship of the state
document on Requirements in the Arts for Students Who Will Become
Elementary Teachers; and
WHEREAS she has faithfully served the university as department chairman
for twelve years, acting Dean of Humanities/Social Sciences, Assistant
Dean of Humanities/Social Sciences, faculty senator, on numerous
campus-wide and departmental committees; and
WHEREAS she has achieved national and regional recognition as a composer
and performer through her selection as 1996 Woman Composer of the Year by
the National Federation of Music Clubs, her being commissioned by the
Choristers Guild of America to write a work for them, her performances
with the Beam/Woskowiak Duo Piano Team at two national conferences
featuring women artists in Kansas City, MO and in Buffalo, NY where her
Suite for Two Pianos was premiered; and
WHEREAS she has contributed generously to the musical life of the
university and community through her roles as a soloist and accompanist on
numerous faculty recitals, her guest conducting at Pennsylvania Music
Educators Association District festivals and Pennsylvania Music Teachers
Association Piano Festivals, as church organist and choir director, as
president of Musical Arts Society, as composition judge for the National
Federation of Music Clubs, and as clinician for the Pennsylvania Music
Educators Association and Music Educators National Conference;
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Music Faculty of Millersville
University thank and congratulate Dr. Woskowiak for her diverse
contributions to the life of the university and music education; and
further
BE IT RESOLVED that we remain ever inspired by her pursuit of high
scholarly achievements, tireless dedication, and concern for humanity; and
BE IT RESOLVED that we wish her much continued success, joy, music making,
and other pleasures of life that her retirement will brig her; and finally
BE IT RESOLVED that the Music Department recommends that Dr. LeonaFrances
Woskowiak be granted the rank of Professor Emeritus.
