Meeting of the Faculty Senate

2 March 1999


Chairperson Joel Piperberg called the meeting to order at 4:08 p.m. in Chryst 210. All departments were represented except Elementary & Early Childhood Education. Dr. William Smith (APSCUF) and Christine Schwarz, representing the Graduate Student Organization, were also present.

The minutes of the meeting of February 16, 1999 were approved.

Report of the Faculty Chairperson

Chairperson Piperberg asked Senators to sign an attendance sheet.

He announced that the Summer meeting of the Senate will be held on Tuesday, June 15, at 3 PM in Myers Auditorium of McComsey Hall.

Chairperson Piperberg reminded committee chairpersons to determine how many terms members have served and to provide him with information as soon as possible.

He added that Secretary J. Alden will not be present at the next meting (March 16) because of a professional conference and that he is looking for a volunteer to take the minutes on that date.

Reports of Administrative Officers

Associate Provost Stager In response to a question raised at an earlier meeting, Dr. Stager said that Perspective Courses can be counted toward Major Requirements, if another Perspectives course has been used to fulfill the requirement for at least one Perspectives (P) course.

Associate Provost Roller Dr. Roller invited faculty who might want to participate in interaction with students prior to the start of classes in the Fall to contact her.

Reports of Senate Standine Committees

UCPRC Chairperson R. Wismer reported that the second draft of the proposal for Distance Learning Course Approval process had been distributed. His committee will consider it again on Tuesday (March 9) and it is planned to bring the matter to the Senate on March 16.

General Education Review Committee

Chairperson C. Stameshkin said that the committee, with the voluntary assistance of BPED, will administer pilot tests of some national General Education tests. The objective is to gather data to help people who will conduct assessment and to help decide whether the tests will be of any value.

Academic Standards

Chairperson J. Sciarretta drew Senators attention to Academic/Dismissals/Appeals charts that indicate numbers from Fall 1989 to 1998 and Spring 1990 to Spring 1998 (see attachment). He pointed out that the back of the attachment (see attachment)) contains the form used to notify students of the Appeals decision and recommendations immediately following the hearing so that the students will have a hard copy of the information to carry with them.

Honors Committee

Chairperson M. Warmkessel reminded Senators about the visit next week of Dr. William Mech, Dean of the Honors College at Florida Atlantic. Specific information will be distributed. Plans for the visit include a special meeting on Wednesday for Senators and two open meetings for all interested faculty. Senators will be informed of the dates and times of these meetings via e-mail.

She also announced that applications to succeed Dr. Osborne as the Director of the Honors Program will be mailed shortly.

Graduate Course Program Review Committee The Senate Chairperson announced that a proposal to redefine courses in M.Ed will be brought forward at the next meeting of the Senate.

Special Reports of Senate Standing Committees No reports.

Proposed Courses and Programs The request from the Geography Department to remove the W label from GEOG 202, Resources in the Environment, was approved.

Election Chairperson of the Women's Studies Curriculum Committee.

Hearing no nominations for the vacant chair position, Senate Chairperson Piperberg deleted the item from future agendas. Nominations for the position could be reopened at any future meeting. (Note this item has been added to the agenda of the next meeting because a nomination has been received.)

General Education Obiectives

Section II Objectives.

Science & Math. Objective B9 was passed without change.

After much discussion that included potential change in the wording in 10b, Section II Objective B10 was passed without changes.

Social Sciences. Part C

11a. On a Kenrich/Warmkessel motion, the wording "demonstrate understanding" was changed to "articulate." The objective, with the new wording, was passed by the Senate. The Senate also agreed to strike 11b.

Part C, 12 was passed.

Chairperson Piperberg announced that Section II, Part A (Humanities) and Section III of the General Education Objectives will be discussed at the next meeting of the Senate.

The meeting adjourned at 5:20 p.m.
