Subject: Emerita Status for Jacqueline Long

Date: 30 May 2000


WHEREAS Jacqueline Long has completed 34 years of dedicated service to the University and the Department of Foreign Languages; and

WHEREAS with Dr. Theodore Rupp, Mrs. Long founded the French Graduate Summer School in 1967, served as its director from 1983 to 1997, and during that time developed and taught numerous new graduate courses; and

WHEREAS she was advisor to the French Circle for 32 years and an active worker in its many activities, and coordinator of the department's French Section for 28 years; and

WHEREAS she developed the Commercial French program and made Millersville University a center for the Certificar de franqais economique et commercial; and

WHEREAS she has on every occasion been a key organizer of the Department's annual In-Service Conference and made many presentations at those conferences; and

WHEREAS she has been a tireless worker for greater student awareness of the riches of French culture and over the years has organized countless visits to museums and cultural events, as well as keeping constantly alert to the interests of other languages and cultures represented by our department; and

WHEREAS she has been generous with her time in showing new department faculty and foreign tourists the sights of Lancaster City and County and sharing her knowledge of local history and the arts, thus becoming a valuable resource for many, including countless visitors from abroad;

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that in consideration of all the above, the Department of Foreign Languages congratulates Mrs. Long on her retirement and thanks her for her many years of dedicated service and friendship; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that we recommend that Mrs. Long be granted the rank of Associate Professor Emerita.
