Meeting of the Faculty Senate
November 19, 2002

The meeting was called to order at 4:15 pm. All academic departments were present except the Business Administration and Nursing Departments.

I. Approval of Minutes

The minutes of the November 5, 2002 Faculty Senate Meeting were approved as distributed.

II. Report of the Faculty Senate Chairperson

Senator C. Heintzelman reported for the Faculty Professional Development Council and announced that grant money was available with a focus on University Special Projects and intrasystem projects.

Chairperson Piperberg announced that elections for Faculty Senate officers will take place at the February 4, 2003 Faculty Senate meeting.

Chairperson Piperberg announced that discussion of the Diversity requirement would begin after completion of the normal agenda items.

A S. Yalda/B. Dorman motion passed which suspended the normal Senate rules to allow for extended discussion of the teaching award agenda item at the December 3, 2002 Faculty Senate meeting.

A S. Yalda/B. Dorman motion passed which postponed discussion of the teaching award agenda item until the December 5, 2002 meeting.

III. Report of the Senate Student President

Student Senate President B. Danz expressed appreciation to all faculty who attended the dedication of the Civil War monument Brick-by-Brick Project.

The Student Senate is also initiating a readership program, which will provide free newspapers to MU students.

The Hon. Rep. Jere Shuler will discuss an open resolution on the MU campus at 6 pm on Thursday, Nov. 21.

IV. Report of the Graduate Student Organization -- No Report.

V. Reports of Administrative Officers

Provost F. McNairy expressed appreciation to all faculty who participated in the open house on Saturday, Nov. 16. She also reported that applications from high profile students from local high schools have increased.

Associate Provost C. Phillips reported that registration for the winter and spring 2003 semesters is going well. She also reported on the activities of the Common Calendar Task Force. In addition, a draft of procedures for future winter sessions was discussed and distributed.

Assistant Provost J. Bello-Ogunu discussed the new Multicultural Mentoring Program and invited faculty to participate.

VI. Reports of the Faculty Senate Standing Committees

UCPRC Chair R. Wismer introduced five proposals:

  1. SOCY 303, to be modified to require a grade of C- or better for SOCY/CRIM majors
  2. SOCY 310, status to be change to Perspectives
  3. ENGL 347, new G1 Writing (W) course
  4. ENGL 484, new G1 Writing (W) course
  5. BIOL 467, to be a non-core, non-gen ed Writing course

GCPRC Chair R. Mowrey introduced a new Certification program for Supervision in Curriculum and Instruction.

A R. Mowrey/R. Bookmiller motion passed which sent the issue of the International Studies program to the Academic Policies Committee for further review. The motion proposes referral to the Academic Policies Committee all matters pertaining to International Studies that are currently before the Faculty Senate and asks that the Committee respond in a timely manner with their findings, recommendations and/or a motion.

VII. Report of the Faculty Senate Special Committees

K. Schrieber reported that the Ad Hoc Honor Code Committee had revised the honor code proposal and that it had been sent to Vice President R. Thomas for approval.

VIII. Proposed Courses and Programs

  1. NEW GRADUATE COURSE**
    Change in the course number of the survey course in children's literature from EDUC 633 (Children's Literature) to EDUC 535 (Literature for Children and Young Adolescents; 3 credit hours). EDUC 535 will replace EDUC 633 for graduate post-baccalauraeate students already holding teacher certification in an area other than Elementary Education and for post-baccalaureate students holding a degree outside of teacher education. It will also be dual-numbered with EDUC 333 (Children's Literature). Desired effective date - Spring 2004.

  2. NEW GRADUATE COURSE**
    EDUC 536 B Picture Book Communication, 3 credit hours. For graduate M. Ed. Elementary Education students. Desired effective date B Summer 2004.

  3. NEW GRADUATE COURSE**
    EDUC 636 B Literature and Response, 3 credit hours. Replaces EDUC 633 (Children's Literature) for graduate M. Ed. Elementary Education students. Desired effective date B Spring 2004.

  4. CHANGES IN COURSES/CURRICULA**
    Revision of Post-baccalaureate Certification in Elementary Education. For students holding Instructional I Certificate in an area other than elementary education. EDUC 633 (Children's Literature) replaced by EDUC 535 (Literature for Children and Young Adolescents). Desired effective date- Spring 2004.

  5. CHANGES IN COURSES/CURRICULA**
    Revision of M. Ed. In Reading and Language Arts. EDUC 633 (Children's Literature) or a topical course in children's literature replaced by EDUC 636 (Literature and Response) or a topical course in children's literature (EDUC 533 B Nonfiction Literature and Literacy, EDUC 634 B Realism in Children's Literature, EDUC 635 B Folk Literature and Its Oral Tradition, EDUC 536 B Picture Books or a Topics in Education course on children's or young adult literature. Desired effective date- Spring 2004.

  6. CHANGES IN COURSES/CURRICULA**
    Revision of Post-baccalaureate Certification in Elementary Education. For students holding baccalaureate degree in a field other than elementary education. EDUC 633 (Children's Literature) replaced by EDUC 535 (Literature for Children and Young Adolescents). Desired effective date- Spring 2004.

  7. NEW GRADUATE COURSE**
    ELED 576 B Assessment for Instructional Planning, 3 credit hours. Desired effective date B Spring 2004.

  8. CHANGES IN COURSES/CURRICULA**
    Revision of Post-baccalaureate Certification in Elementary Education. For students holding baccalaureate degree in a field other than elementary education. Addition of ELED 576 as a required course in post-baccalaureate certification. When Assessment for Instructional Planning is offered as a Topics in Education course prior to the approval of ELED 576, it will satisfy the requirement of ELED 576. Desired effective date- Spring 2004.

  9. NEW UNDERGRADUATE COURSE**
    ESCI 350 B History of Meteorology, 3 credit hours. A Perspectives (P) course. Desired effective date B Spring 2003.

  10. NEW GRADUATE COURSE**
    BIOL 667 B Human Genetics: Analysis and Applications, 3 credit hours. Desired effective date B Fall 2003

  11. NEW UNDERGRADUATE COURSE**
    SOWK 313 B Family Violence, 3 credit hours. A Perspectives (P) course. Desired effective date B Fall 2003.

IX. Faculty Emeritus

A S. Casselberry/A. Bvrger-Greco motion recommending that Dr. Charles S. Nissly be granted the honorary title of Assistant Professor of International Studies Emeritus passed without dissent. (see attachment.)

A E. Rohena/C. Heintzelman motion recommending that Dr. Ruth M. Buehler be granted the honorary title of Professor of Special Education Emerita passed without dissent. (see attachment.)

X. Discussion of the Diversity (D) Requirement Proposal

The Diversity (D) requirement proposal was discussed at length and given back to the General Education Review Committee that had brought the proposal to Faculty Senate for feedback.

The meeting was adjourned at 5:48 pm.
