Meeting of the Faculty Senate
June 10, 2003

The meeting was called to order at 3:12 pm. All academic departments were represented except Business Administration, Chemistry, Economics, History, Philosophy and Special Education.

Specifically, courses proposed for G1 credit must be approved by the Humanities Curriculum Committee, courses proposed for G2 credit must be approved by the Mathematics and Science Curriculum Committee, and courses proposed for G3 credit must be approved by the Social Sciences Curriculum Committee.   2. The roster of vacant Senate Committee seats for the Fall was distributed. Mistakes should be pointed out to the Chairperson, who will take nominees for seats all summer and will periodically remind the Faculty Senate of the openings over the summer as well. {See Attachment}

  3. The Chairperson announced that he had not heard from two departments about their Senate elections (EDFN & Communications) and asked that those departments let him know the results those elections.

  4. Tentative dates were announced for next year's Faculty Senate meeting dates: September 2 and 16, October 7 and 21, November 4 and 18, December 2, February 3 and 17, March 2 and 16, April 6 and 20, May 4 and either June 8 or 15.

  5. The Chairperson expressed appreciation for Paul Studdard's having served as Secretary during the 2002-2003 academic year and reminded the Faculty Senate that a secretary was needed for the 2003-2004 academic year.

  6. Senators were asked to remind faculty in their departments to get their new ID cards made ASAP. Faculty in McComsey and other buildings on campus will need those cards to get into office suites after hours & weekends. For questions, call Barbara Buchanan X5659.

III. Report of the Student Senate President

The Student Senate President for the 2003-2004 academic year is Kristin Albright, who was unable to attend the current meeting.

IV. Report of the Graduate Student Organization--No report.

V. Report of Administrative Officers

Associate Provost C. Phillips announced that there will be a special meeting of the Dean's Council to address the curriculum changes that were being approved at the current meeting. The degree audit system will also be updated to reflect these changes.

VI. Report of the Faculty Senate Standing Committees

UCPRC -- A B. Dorman/A. Borger-Greco motion was passed which waived the one-meeting rule for course approvals of the courses and curricula introduced formally at the current meeting.

GCPRC -- The Experimental Course Policy for Graduate Studies was approved {See Attachment #1}. Chairperson R. Mowrey also introduced a policy for incomplete grades for graduate courses to be acted on in the Fall. {See Attachment #2}

GERC -- The proposed changes to the General Education section of the Governance Manual were approved.

VII. Reports of the Faculty Senate Special Committees

Faculty Senate Chairperson Piperberg announced that the Honor Code Committee would need a new chairperson next year and thanked K. Schreiber for all of her efforts since the inception of the committee.

IX. Faculty Emeritus

A J. Piperberg/C. Heintzelman motion passed which granted Dr. Carolyn Yoder the honorary title of Assistant Professor of Chemistry Emeritus. {See Attachment #3}

A J. Piperberg/S. Yalda motion passed which granted Dr. James Parks the title of Professor of Biology Emeritus. {See Attachment #4}

X. Election of Faculty Senate Secretary--Postponed until Fall 2003.

XI. Educator of the Year Award--Postponed until Fall 2003 {See Attachment #5}

The meeting was adjourned at 4:45 pm.
