Re: Resolution of Emeritus Status for Dr. Charles K. Scharnberger

The faculty of the Department of Earth Sciences unanimously approves and recommends to the Faculty Senate the following resolution:

Whereas Dr. Charles K. Scharnberger retired in January 2003 after 30 years of dedicated service to Millersville University, and

Whereas Dr. Charles K. Scharnberger served as the Chair of the Department of Earth Sciences for nine years, and

Whereas Dr. Charles K. Scharnberger taught a total of 16 courses during his time at Millersville, and developed a number of new courses in geophysics, and

Whereas Dr. Charles K. Scharnberger is the author of over 25 scientific papers and abstracts, and has presented at numerous conferences, and

Whereas Dr. Charles K. Scharnberger is considered to be an authority on seismicity and earthquake history of Pennsylvania, and is a Registered Professional Geologist in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and has served as a consultant for the government, emergency management, and news media, and

Whereas Dr. Charles K. Scharnberger tirelessly served as an advisor and mentor to many students and all the faculty in the Department of Earth Sciences, and

Whereas Dr. Charles K. Scharnberger served one term as the President of APSCUF-MU, and six years on the Executive Board of APSCUF-MU, and

Whereas Dr. Charles K. Scharnberger proposed the display of decals on university vans and cars, and

Whereas Dr. Charles K. Scharnberger oversaw six successful faculty searches, and was a member of the search committee for the Dean of the School of Science and Mathematics, and

Whereas Dr. Charles K. Scharnberger oversaw the recently completed five-year program review, and

Whereas Dr. Charles K. Scharnberger served on numerous university committees, including the Faculty Senate, and served as non-Senator Parliamentarian of the Faculty Senate, and

Whereas Dr. Charles K. Scharnberger served as the Chair of the Academic Standards Committee, and proposed the current system of academic probation, and

Whereas Dr. Charles K. Scharnberger served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Millersville Foundation, and

Whereas Dr. Charles K. Scharnberger has presented numerous talks to community organizations and as part of Spotlight on Science Program, and

Whereas Dr. Charles K. Scharnberger has served as the President and Vice President of the Harrisburg Area Geological Society, and

Therefore be it resolved that the faculty of the Department of Earth Sciences wishes to thank Dr. Charles K. Scharnberger for his contributions to Millersville University and unhesitatingly recommends that Dr. Charles K. Scharnberger be granted the honorary title of Professor of Earth Sciences Emeritus.
