I. Minutes of the June 8, 2004 Meeting

Minutes were approved as distributed.

II. Report of the Faculty Senate Chairperson

The new Chairperson Kerper presented a gift to the former Chairperson Piperberg and recognized his excellent service to the Faculty Senate.

In an attempt to insure that items are discussed in a timely fashion, Chairperson Kerper informed the Faculty Senate that from now on items XI to XIV in today's agenda will be discussed at the September 21, 2004 meeting in the respective committee report as a second reading.

III. Report of the Student Senate President

Kristin Albright, Student Senate President welcomed the Faculty Senate to the new academic year. She reported that the Student Senate met last Thursday. The new academic year activities have resumed.

IV. Report of the Graduate Student Organization

None.

V. Report of Administrative Officers

President McNairy

President McNairy discussed briefly the activities for the celebration of the MU 150th anniversary, encouraging the Faculty Senate to attend the A kick off activity scheduled for Thursday, September 9, 2004, followed by the President's traditional Garden Supper.

President McNairy reported about the 3% increase in the university budget, and reminded the faculty Senate that in previous years, the university's budgetary allocation decreased. Briefly, she provided some details about how the money was distributed, most of it to Academic Affairs (60%), allowing the university to expand faculty complement by two. The faculty will get a copy of the budget for their review.

As in previous years, U.S. News & World Report ranked Millersville University in the top 50 private and public universities in the North and in the top 10 (5th) among all regional universities in the nation.

Provost Prabhu

The newly appointed Provost was warmly introduced by President McNairy. Provost Prabhu talked briefly about his background and encouraged the Faculty Senate to communicate with him as often as possible.

Executive Assistant to the President Phillips

Executive Assistant to the President Phillips briefly reported about the successful academic year that the university had. Admissions increased considerably for this new academic year.

Vice President of Student Affairs Thomas

Vice President of Student Affairs Thomas reported on the challenges of housing in this new academic year. The Counseling Center received accreditation from the International Association of Counseling Services, becoming one of only eight universities in Pennsylvania to receive this accreditation. The number of student-athletes with GPAs of 2.5 or higher increased this year by approximately by 25%. A grant for $10,000 was awarded to the university for education on the issue of alcohol abuse among college students.

Vice President of University Advancement Eckert

Vice President of University Advancement Eckert reported on the year long activities that begin on Thursday, September 9th in celebration of the university's 150th anniversary. He encouraged the Faculty Senate to read the book written by History Department member, Dr. Dennis Downey, outlining the history of the university. A pin commemorating the celebrations will be available for the faculty.

VII. Report of the Faculty Senate Special Committees

None.

VIII. Proposed Courses and Programs

Portfolio review for Art majors was approved. Effective Fall 2005 for freshman, transfer, double-majors, and internal transfer students.

IX. Faculty Emeritus

None.

X. Committee Elections

A motion was passed to close nominations and to direct the secretary to cast one vote for all nominees whose committee seats were uncontested. Committee elections took placed.

XI. Other/New Business

None.
