The meeting was called to order at 4:12 p.m. All departments were in attendance except Art & Design, Athletics, Biology, Computer Science, Government & Political Affairs, Interdisciplinary Studies, and Music.
II. Proposed Courses and Programs
(1) NEW UNDERGRADUATE COURSE
EDSE 471: Differentiating Instruction in the Classroom, 3 credits. Proposal for a course to train teacher candidates to develop and apply knowledge, skills, and dispositions in accommodating instruction for English-language learners and students with disabilities was approved without dissent.
(2) NEW UNDERGRADUATE COURSE
ART 246: Sequence, Motion and Visual Communication, 3 credits. Proposal for a course to study of narrative structures and spatial compositions as they relate to time and sequence was approved without dissent.
Communication & Theatre requested the word “visual” be added to the course title for ART 246.
(3) NEW UNDERGRADUATE COURSE
ART 247: Intro to Experience and Interaction Design, 3 credits. Proposal for a course to focus on the fundamentals of user-centered design and usability issues surrounding Web-based interfaces was approved without dissent.
(4) NEW UNDERGRADUATE COURSE
ART 349: Information Design: Wayfinding, 3 credits, W. Proposal for a W course to introduce principles of Information Design: Wayfinding for environmental signage was approved without dissent.
(5) CHANGE TO UNDERGRADUATE CURRICULUM
BA, BFA, BSE in Art. Proposal to update course offerings to include new courses in Graphic/Interactive Design was approved without dissent.
(6) NEW UNDERGRADUATE CURRICULUM
BA Multidisciplinary Studies. Proposal to establish a degree program that allows students to work with faculty advisors to develop a unique course of study tailored to combine interests in multiple fields, culminating in an integrated capstone experience was approved with one opposing vote.
An A. Miller/Saunders motion to amend the proposal to remove comparison of a Multidisciplinary Studies Curriculum Committee to the Social Science Curriculum Committee, specify the MSCC as a standing committee of Faculty Senate, add election of a chairperson for the MSCC by Faculty Senate, and remove reporting to UCPRC was approved without dissent.
Senator Marquez commended Dr. Downey and the Task Force for their hard work developing this program.

Dr. Adams reported on nominations being accepted for a civic service award, spring convocation, a campus visit of W. Gardner Campbell, and CAE roundtables on academic expectations and at-risk students. He also thanked Dr. Sharon Brusic for heading the CAE in recent years and announced that recruiting will begin soon for a new coordinator.
VII. Reports of the Faculty Senate Standing Committees
Senator Kelly reminded senators that dropping a GenEd label does not require a justification but that departments should notify the Registrar’s Office along with curriculum bodies so that registration information can be updated for students as soon as possible. Dr. Kelly also noted the procedure for approving a UNIV103 proposal, found on the General Education website, requires submission of only the original document and the corresponding electronic file and a meeting of the proposer with the FYI sub-committee.

(9) NEW UNDERGRADUATE COURSE
HIST 480: History of Medicine, 3 credits, G3. Proposal for a course exploring the history of medicine, health, and disease from the ancient world to the present.
A question was raised about whether these courses could include a D or P label, but it was noted that the class sizes would make incorporation of significant oral and written components difficult.

A Mahoney/Neuville motion to send the Proposed Revision to the General Education Program (Version I) to the general faculty for approval of the changes via a line-item vote was approved with five dissenting votes.
