Millersville University Math student wins SIAM research prize.

Mr. John A. Gemmer of Millersburg PA and a senior math/physics major at Millersville University, won one of two $150 cash prizes presented by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) to students giving the best presentations of their undergraduate research in applied mathematics during  MathFest 2005 held in Albuquerque, New Mexico, August 4-8.  MathFest is the annual summer meeting of the Mathematical Association of America. The other SIAM award winner was Mr. Andrew Harrell of Texas A&M.  Overall, 138 students gave 99 presentations across a wide range of topics in applied and theoretical mathematics. Of these, 22 received awards from various organizations.  Students were eligible for at most one award.

 

Mr. Gemmer will graduate from Millersville University in the spring of 2006.  His undergraduate research project, entitled "The Generalized Brachristochrone Problem," involved original work and was codirected by Drs. Michael Nolan and Ronald Umble.  His home address is 879 Union Street, Millersburg PA 17061
