Meetings:
2 meetings during the academic year. Nor formal minutes were taken at any of the meetings. Average attendance was 7 members.

Motions Forwarded to Senate:
5/2/95
Recommendation to select as the 1997-1998 and 1988-1989 academic themes "Culture and Communication in the Electronic Village" and"MU: A Community of Learners," respectively. The 1998-1989 Committee is in the process of selecting a new title for their theme. Motion to be approved by Faculty Senate.

Other Deliberations and Actions:
The Committee solicited from Faculty, Staff and students suggestions for the 1997-1998 Academic Theme. Four suggestions were received. The titles are listed below and copies of the original proposals are attached to this report:

The Committee met with the proposers of all four themes to hear their ideas about the intended focus of and events related to their themes. After deliberation, the Committee decided that the four solid proposals that were received warranted the naming of the 1998-1999 theme in addition to the 1997-1998 theme.

Joel Piperberg has met a number of times with the Steering Committee of the 1995-1996 Academic Theme (In Search of Justice) and serves on that Committee in an advisory capacity. In the future, the University theme Committee will meet with members of the 1995-1996 Steering Committee to discuss plans for that theme.

Matters Currently in Committee:
None.

Future Plans:
Next year, the Committee will solicit suggestions for the 1999-2000 Academic Theme and monitor the progress of other themes presently in preparation.
