As the President's designee, I am informing you of the approval of the following Faculty Senate Curricular Actions:

Faculty Senate action at December 4, 2001, meeting:

Changes in Courses/Curricula:

NEW option in Physics, B.A. in Physics, Computer Science option

• Total credit hours required: 120
• 32 credit hours in Physics
• Required related courses: 47 credits

COMMENT: Courses used for the new option are existing courses. See attached curriculum sheet for details of requirements for the option. The intention of the new option is to replace the BS Physics, Computer Engineering program.

Delete option in B. S. Physics, Computer Engineering option (128 s.h)

** Originally, this curricular proposal was returned to Dean Shane and the Department of Physics because 124 credits were required for the degree; subsequently the Department was asked to revisit the proposal to assure fulfillment of the System's 120-credit requirement. In evaluating the proposal, it was determined that the competency requirement in Foreign Languages is based upon successful completion of high school courses. Based upon our discussion at Deans' Council, we encourage Faculty Senate to embark upon a discussion regarding the assurance of competency in a curricular area and what constitutes student demonstration of competency.
