| WHEREAS | Dr. De Souza served the students of Millersville University and the Department of Earth Sciences for 24 years, and | ||
| WHEREAS | Dr. De Souza was instrumental in establishing the B.S. program in meteorology and building that program to the level of success that it enjoys today, and | ||
| WHEREAS | Dr. De Souza served as advisor and mentor to hundreds of meteorology majors, and | ||
| WHEREAS | Dr. De Souza initiated the Academic Affiliates Program of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research and served as Millersville University's representative to that body, and | ||
| WHEREAS | Dr. De Souza served Millersville University as chair of the Millersville University Network Implementation Committee, and as a member of the Academic Computing Advisory Committee, the Library Advisory Committee, and the Faculty-Student Athletic Committee, and as faculty representative to the National Collegiate Athletic Association, and | ||
| WHEREAS | Dr. De Souza served the Earth Sciences Department as UNIX netowrk administrator, as chair of the Honors and Awards Committee, and as acting department chair, and | ||
| WHEREAS | Dr. De Souza served the larger community as a resource person in meteorology, as Honorary Chairman of the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, and in campus ministry, and | ||
| WHEREAS | Dr. De Souza has inspired all who have known him to strive for excellence in all they undertake while maintaining the highest standards of integrity and concern for others, THEREFORE | ||
| Be it resolved that Dr. Russell L. De Souza be granted the rank of Professor of Meteorology, Emeritus. |
| WHEREAS | Dr. Bernard L. Oostdam has announced his retirement effective at the end of the spring semester, 1997, and | ||
| WHEREAS | Dr. Oostdam served the students of Millersville University and the Department of Earth Sciences for 30 years, and | ||
| WHEREAS | Dr. Oostdam established the oceanography program at Millersville University and developed it into the only B.S. degree program in oceanography in the State System of Higher Education, and | ||
| WHEREAS | Dr. Oostdam has insisted on maintaining the highest academic standards, while going out of his way to provide extra help to students who have sought it, and | ||
| WHEREAS | Dr. Oostdam has served as advisor and mentor to many undergraduate and graduate students in oceanography, and has served as advisor to the Ocean Science Club and the Marine Technology Society, and | ||
| WHEREAS | Dr. Oostdam was largely responsible for the acquisition and equipping of a dedicated oceanography laboratory in Brossman Hall, and | ||
| WHEREAS | Dr. Oostdam has maintained an independent spirit, not fearing to promote policies that he considered best for Millersville University or protesting those that he considered ill-advised, even when this led to conflict with the Administration or his colleagues, and | ||
| WHEREAS | Dr. Oostdam served the Department of Earth Sciences for many years as chair of its Human Resources Committee, and the University as a member of the Women in Science and Math Committee and on the Search Committee for Dean of the School of Science and Math and for the Dean of Graduate Studies and Extended Programs, and | ||
| WHEREAS | Dr. Oostdam founded The Marine Science Consortium, and served as its president from 1968-1976, and | ||
| WHEREAS | Dr. Oostdam has served the world community as a consultant in marine sciences and oceanographic education for the United Nations and the United States Information Agency in several nations, and | ||
| WHEREAS | Dr. Oostdam has performed and supervised significant research on coast and estuarine pollution, and | ||
| WHEREAS | Dr. Oostdam was one of the earliest and most enthusiastic users of the World Wide Web for educational purposes, establishing websites for Caribbean Coastal Studies and Environmental Hazards/Emergency Management, and | ||
| WHEREAS | Dr. Oostdam has taken a leading role in planning for a new interdisciplinary minor in Environmental Hazards and Emergency Management and has developed a new course in Natural Hazards, THEREFORE | ||
| Be it resolved that Dr. Bernard L. Oostdam be granted the rank of Professor of Oceanography, Emeritus. |
