Advisement Initiatives

Fall 2000

Mandatory Advisement will be required for the following groups of currently enrolled students:

• All full-time undergraduates with 45 or fewer earned credits.
• All Undecided students with more than 45 earned credits.
• All students on probation, full and part-time.
• Newly admitted (Fall, 2000) full-time transfer students.
  

Implementation

• Advisers will be issued a unique advisement pin number for each advisee who has been designated for Mandatory Advisement. Please note: Advisers may be assigned a mix of students who may and may not have mandatory advisement.
• Department Chairpersons and School beans will be issued a copy of the pin numbers for all students in their departments/schools.
• Neither the Registrar's Office nor the Office of Academic Advisement will have student advisement pin numbers. Students calling for assistance will be referred back to their major department.
• Students for whom Mandatory Advisement is required will be denied access to registering for courses if they can't provide the unique advisement pin number.

Part-time Student Advising Assistance

The Office of Academic Advisement, in cooperation with Departments with ACE programs or large numbers of part-time students, is coordinating evening advisement hours on Monday-Thursday evenings, October 30-November 10. This is not designed to replace department initiatives, but to support these efforts.

Faculty Development Sessions: Faculty and Staff advisers are encouraged to attend n short (30-45 minute) workshop on the new mandatory advisement procedures. Also covered in this session will be a quick review of common advisement errors related to the genera) education requirements. Please plan to attend one of the following:

Thursday October 12 4 pm SMC Room 161
Wednesday October 18 12 noon SMC Room 161(bring lunch if you want)

Dr. Paul Specht and Dr. Carol Phillips are also available for meetings with small groups of faculty by department or academic building as requested (ext. 3703). They will be meeting with the School Council, Science and Mathematics, on October 9.

Prerequisite Checking

Prerequisite checking will be active for Voice Registration again this fall. Please note that a new addition is Math Placement Test Scores as part of prerequisite checks.

Please discuss. the new mandatory advisement requirements with students in your classes.

Evaluations of the Department Advising Sessions held on Sunday, August 27, indicate they were a huge success! Thanks for all of your efforts in advising our new students. And, mark your calendar for Sunday, August 26, 2001, for next year's event, which we are planning now.

Faculty Web Features available In early October:

Faculty, advisers, and authorized staff (ex. Department secretaries and those who currently use OARS on Banner) will be able to enter their ID and PIN number to access academic information:

For faculty only:

• Faculty can view their own teaching schedules
• Faculty can view their own class lists and access additional information on individual students in their classes

For faculty, advisers and authorized staff:

• DARS: Process and view a student's degree audit
• View a student's address and phone
• View a student's class schedule
• View a student's academic transcript
• View student information (curriculum, adviser, status, etc.)

Other web features being evaluated:

• Students' emaiI addresses
• Online registration drops and adds
• Processing final grades on-line
