| WHEREAS |
John F. Apple, Associate Professor in Wellness and Sport Sciences,
retired in May of 2002 after 36 years of teaching, advising, and coaching
at Millersville University; and |
|
|
| WHEREAS |
Associate Professor Apple served the Department of Wellness and
Sport Sciences, the School of Education, and the University on numerous
committees (some, which he chaired, including the Professional Development
and Evaluation Committee, several times); and |
|
|
| WHEREAS |
Associate Professor Apple served his profession and the University
as an advisor to several clubs and fraternities and to the
undecided/undeclared students; and |
|
|
| WHEREAS |
Associate Professor Apple served as Men's Head Swimming and Diving
Coach from 1965-1980 with many of his athletes achieving excellence by
qualifying for national championships and winning several state and
tri-state championships, and received national recognition for his
pre-season crutch-walking training, and organizing relay carnivals and
competitive swim clinics for local youngsters as scholarship fund-raisers;
and |

| WHEREAS |
Associate Professor Apple served as Women's Diving Coach
from 1981-1985, Assistant Men's Soccer Coach from 1981-1985 and Men's Head
Tennis Coach for five years finishing as runner-up state champions twice;
and |
|
|
| WHEREAS |
Associate Professor Apple initiated eight new undergraduate
courses, one of which was Scuba Diving and trained well over 1,000
Millersville students with approximately 50% becoming nationally certified
divers, and yaught three courses in the nationally recognized athletic
coaching minor; and |
|
|
| WHEREAS |
Associate Professor Apple initiated two new graduate courses for
the M. Ed. In Sport Management Program; and |
|
|
| WHEREAS |
Associate Professor Apple has served with distinction as an
American Red Cross Instructor since 1960 and has nationally certified a
large number of Millersville students in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation,
First Aid and Life Guarding; and |
|
|
| WHEREAS |
Associate Professor Apple has been extremely active in the
surrounding community as a member of the Board of Directors for the
American Cancer Society and the Lancaster Young Men's Christian
Association; and |
|
|
| WHEREAS |
Associate Professor Apple has served as Lancaster County
Chairperson for 8 years for the Save-A-Life Swim for Cancer Fundraiser and
served as Lancaster County Swimmers Swim League President in 1966 and
1977; and |
|
|
| WHEREAS |
Associate Professor Apple utilized his professional training and
practical experiences as a basis for providing sound guidance and
mentorship for his students and athletes, many of whom have gone into
teaching and coaching; and |
|
|
| THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: |
That the Department of Wellness and Sport Sciences unanimously and
without reservation recommends that John F. Apple be granted the honorary
title of Associate Professor of Wellness and Sport Sciences Emeritus. |
