Minutes
Meeting of the Faculty Senate
September 21, 2004
The meeting was called to order at 4:13 p.m. All departments were in attendance.
I. Minutes of the September 7, 2004 Meeting
Minutes were approved as distributed.
II. Report of the Faculty Senate Chairperson
Chairperson Kerper informed the Faculty Senate that alternate Senator Labant for
Elementary and Early Childhood Education will be attending the Senate meetings
representing the interests of the department while Chairperson Kerper maintains a
university-wide focus. Chairperson Kerper will still be the voting member and be
able to break tie votes.
III. Report of the Student Senate President
Kristin Albright, Student Senate President will provide by email to Chairperson
Kerper a list of the Student Senate members. Student Senate President Albright is
the chair of BSUP. Millersville University will be chairing a meeting for BSUP on
November 12-13.
IV. Report of the Graduate Student Organization

President McNairy
No report.
Provost Prabhu
Provost Pradhu noted that the Academic Affairs Strategic Plan for 2003-2004
highlights are available and are being distributed.
Executive Assistant to the President Phillips
Executive Assistant to the President Phillips briefly introduced the Director of
Admissions. She also reminded the Faculty Senate of the first Open House scheduled
for September 25, 2004.
VI. Report of the Faculty Senate Standing Committees
First Readings: None.
Second Readings:
Academic Policies Committee: Policies Regarding Interdisciplinary
Programs
Chairperson Kerper, relinquished the chair to present the Interdisciplinary
Programs policy proposed by the Academic Policies Committee that he had chaired
during the 2003-2004 academic year. Senator Rosenthal, Assistant Chair, served as
chair pro tempore.
Dr. Arnold initiated the discussion that led to the following amendments to
the proposed policy [see Attachment
#1]
- On page 2 under b, it should read "A minimum of 18 additional
credits shall
be required in one discipline or clearly defined interdisciplinary course of study,
with at least 9 credits at the 300-400 level.
This amendment was passed by Blazer/Schaffer motion.
- On page 3 under Council of Interdisciplinary Directors, starting
with the second sentence in the first paragraph, it should read "This body will
coordinate the efforts of the interdisciplinary programs and will conduct an election
of a faculty senator from the faculty within the program. The faculty senator will serve
in the CID, if he/she is not serving as a director, and the alternate senator shall
shall be one of the directors.
This amendment was passed by Mowery/Blazer motion.
- On page 1 under definitions, Faculty teaching within the program is
defined
as faculty identified by the director in consultation with the curriculum
committee.
This amendment was passed by Kerper/Borger-Greco motion.
The proposal was approved unanimously as amended.
Academic Policies Committee: Course and Program Procedures
Senator Rosenthal relinquished the chair and the Faculty Senate selected
Senator Mowery as the Chair for this discussion.
- Kerper/Piperberg motion passed to delete in first sentence from
page 1, number 1. the parenthesis with e.g. , lecture or recitation.
The discussion was postponed until the next meeting due to lack of time.
VII. Faculty Emeritus
Glenn/Chaudhary motion - Dr. G. Terry Madonna was granted the honorary title of
Professor of Government and Political Affairs Emeritus. [see Attachment #2]
Glenn/Piperberg motion - Dr. David T. Risser was granted the honorary title of
Associate Professor of Government and Political Affairs Emeritus. [see Attachment #3]
VIII. Committee Elections
Schaeffer/Foster motion passed to close nominations and to direct the secretary to
cast one ballot for all nominees whose committee seats were uncontested. Committee
elections took place.
Meeting was adjourned at 5:45 p.m.
