Millersville University, Faculty Senate
Academic Computing Advisory Committee
Report to Faculty Senate
David H. Hutchens
May 1997
Major Lab Upgrades:
In the 1996-1997 academic year the following labs were upgraded:
- Art Mac Lab: $141,286
- Ganser IBM Lab: $90,221
- McComsey IBM Lab: $51,454
For the 1997-1998 academic year the following lab upgrades are
proposed.
- Stayer Mac Lab: $160,460
- ITEC Osburn Macintosh Lab: $148,080
- Roddy Computer Lab: $62,545
All three upgrades were given equal priority.
Top priority for spending next year is Ad-Hoc Upgrades to various
labs. Campus Wide Information system development, and Dorm networking
totalling $50,000.
Networking of Dorms is scheduled as follows:
- Summer 1996: Burrowes
- Winter 1997: Diehm, Landis
- Summer 1997: Tanger
- Winter 1998: Lenhardt, Gaige, Harbold
- Summer 1998: Hull, Bard, Gilbert
Staff:
Continuing increase in demands for network support (web pages,
connectivity, etc.) places increasingly difficult burden on already
overworked AC staff. There is no relief in sight.
Printing Costs:
We are experiencing rapid growth in printing costs. the basic problem
is that students currently have a (to them) free printing service. With
lots of material available through the library and the WWW, students are
printing much more than they have been. Proposed solutions involve
charging for printing to give the students a financial incentive to be
more frugal and to reimburse the University if they are not. No details at
this time.
Banner:
Administrative computing is pllaning a switch to a new integrated
system for Registration, Financial, Student Records, Alumni, and
Admissions. We will be retaining the DARS system. The switch to Banner
will take place in a couple of years and require significant resources.
Once in place, the integrated package should allow for more consistent
Data Bases. It should also provide us with access via the WWW for advising
and even registration.
