The U.S. Olympic hockey team were the underdogs going against the Soviet Union in the semifinals yet came out victorious defeating them in the Winter Games in Squaw Valley, California. The following day the U.S. comes out on top beating Czechoslovakia to their first-ever Olympic gold medal in hockey.

The Italian Government needed suggestions on how to save the Leaning Tower of Pisa from collapsing, one of their top tourist attractions. The leaning tower standing 180 feet tall was hanging 17 feet south of the base and increased by a fraction every year. This is among the most iconic attractions in Italy.

The first and last Grammy for Best Disco Recording ever was awarded to Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive.” The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences awarded this just as the musical style of Disco was coming to an end. After this year, this category was eliminated from the awards.

On this day, Tiger Woods played in his first PGA tournament at just 16-years-old and was the youngest golfer in 35 years. Woods scored a birdie on his first-ever hole, but finished the tournament at five-over par.
