3.
Ground tissue system (storage, support, photosynthesis)
Cells in the ground tissue
systemperform a variety
of functions including
photosynthesis, storage and support.
a.
parenchyma cells
Parenchyma
cellsare closest to our
"typical" plant cell. They make thin and
flexible primary cell walls
and perform most of the metabolic functions for the plant.
They do not generally divide, but they retain the ability to
do so.
b.
collenchyma cells
Collenchyma
cellsprovide support to
growing regions of the plant. They are
surrounded by thick primary
cell walls.
c.
sclerenchyma cells
Sclerenchyma
cellsproduce thick
secondary cell walls strengthened with lignin.
In most cases, they are also
dead at functional maturity.
i.
fibers
Fiber cellsare long, thin,
tapered cells found in the vascular bundles of
angiosperms. They are the
primary support cells of non-woody stems.
ii.
sclereids
Sclereidsare
irregularly shaped cells that are found throughout the plant
for mechanical
support.
