Group Web Page
Your final assignment is to
prepare your research project for publication on the web.
This can be done as a group, but please make sure all
members contribute significantly. First, write up as a
research paper using the format described below, then
convert to set of web pages. Integrate into the DBLab web
site and insert your figures and tables as
images.
A
scientific research paper generally includes the following
sections. Subheadings within
a section are often appropriate.
Title
and Abstract: see above.
Introduction:
This section provides a statement of the general problems
that you are
investigating, in the
context of background material. As in the proposal, this
information should be
arranged in a logical order, from general to specific.
You
don'tneed
a synopsis of the experimental design; this will be in the
Material
and Methods section. You
doneed to be clear
about how your works follows
logically from previous
work.
Materials
and Methods: In paragraph form give a brief, but
thorough, description of
what you did. It may help to
write out the protocols in outline form first. One way
to determine if your
description is adequate is to ask yourself if a student in
the
course next year could
successfully duplicate your experiment, based only on
what you write and knowledge
of general lab technique.
Results:
Describe what happened. Present your data in prose with a
description of
figures and tables. Each
figure and table should be able to stand by itself, with
an informative title and
caption (legend). This section should
notinclude
interpretation of data. A
useful rule of thumb is that the Results section should
answer questions that begin
with "What..." ("What was done?" "What
happened?"), but
not"Why..." ("Why did
that happen?").
Discussion:
State your conclusions, referring to appropriate figures or
tables, and
your interpretations of the
data. In "real life" you would be able to repeat your
experiments. Look over your
data with a critical eye and note instances where
you would have liked to have
an opportunity to repeat an experiment. Compare
your results to previous
studies. Indicate possible explanations
forand
significance
ofyour findings.
Literature
Cited: List all references cited in the paper using a
standard format. As you
should continue to research
your project as you go along, you should have
more references at this
point than when you wrote your proposal.
