at days 4 (A) and 8 (B) in culture (days 12 and 16 for the chick) showing
stages ranging from short buds to long buds. Skin cultured in Hank’s
Balanced Salt Solution 1X, on Transwell 3452 culture inserts (24mm diameter),
placed in 5% CO2 incubator at 37¾C. (A) Note smooth gradation of short
buds to early long buds from right to left (again, dorsolateral differences
as seen in figure 1), as well as distinct dermal papillae (dark region
of each feather bud). Compare to (B), long bud stages of same cultured
skin segment. Note general direction that the buds are leaning (this would
have been toward the posterior in the chick), and distinct dermal papillae.
